Consumers love Toyota vehicles, however, Toyota, the world’s largest car maker is faced with a serious concern – incorrect or manipulated safety test data. Toyota is suspected of using safety testing methods that do not comply with government regulations. This has created quite a scandal and a PR nightmare for the automaker.
In June 2024, Japanese officials arrived at Toyota’s headquarters in Japan after the safety scandal, which impacts car brands, Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha, to investigate claims that safety testing data was incorrect or had been manipulated. An independent third-party committee found evidence of manipulating safety tests in more than 60 models, over more than 30 years. The oldest case was traced back to 1989.
Three brands, Toyota, Mazda, and Yamaha were ordered to suspend shipment of some vehicles, and all brands were ordered to thoroughly review their safety inspection and certification processes.
Toyota Testing Standards
The testing standards in question are crucial and can result in grave injury or fatalities. Specifically, testing regarding “inadequate data in pedestrian and occupant protection tests” and “errors in crash tests.” Japan’s certification tests are stricter than many other countries and are closely monitored.
Domestic and international vehicle shipments have been suspended for many models. Following the announcement of the investigation, stock in Toyota dropped 4% in Tokyo.
Toyota denies the allegations and the investigation continues. The investigation will be thorough and will not be completed overnight as it is a significant task. How will this impact vehicle shipments and availability in the United States? That remains to be seen.
